Well, this interactive tool is a visual "tug-of-war" to show the difference between two types of growth: Linear and Compounding. You can control both the Green and Red teams (numbers) to see how they stack up against each other.
For each team, you can choose one of two modes using the L (Linear) and C (Compounding) buttons.
A) Linear Growth (The "Add One" Method)
I think of this as simple, steady, predictable growth. For every step you take, the value just goes up by one. It's like walking up a staircase one step at a time.
Example 1: If you set the Green team to L and click on square 3, its value becomes exactly 3.
Example 2: If you then set the Red team to L and click square 8, its value becomes 8.
B) Compounding Growth (The "Doubling" Method)
Instead of adding one, the value doubles at every single step. It starts slowly but grows incredibly fast, like a snowball rolling down a hill.
Example 1: If you set the Green team to C and click on square 3, its value isn't 3. It has doubled twice (Step 1 is 1, Step 2 is 2, Step 3 is 4), so its final value is 4.
Example 2: If you set the Red team to C and click on square 8, its value doubles seven times, becoming a massive 128.
2. The Tug-of-War Bar
The bar at the top shows which team has the higher final value. The number on the square is just the starting point; the final calculated value is what moves the bar.
Example 1 (L vs. C):
Imagine the Green team is building a fence one post at a time (L). After 8 hours (clicking square 8), they have installed 8 fence posts.
Now, imagine the Red team is spreading news (C). One person tells two friends, who each tell two more, and so on. After 4 rounds of sharing (clicking square 4), 8 new people hear the news in that round.
Result: The bar will be split perfectly 50/50 because their final values are equal, even though they were on different squares!
Example 2 (The Power of 'C'):
Imagine the Green team installs fence posts for 8 hours (L), finishing with 8 posts.
Now, the Red team spreads news for 8 rounds (C). The number of people hearing the news on the 8th round skyrockets to 128.
Result: The bar will shift almost completely to the Red side, showing just how dramatically compounding growth outpaces linear growth over the same number of steps.
